Comments:- Recording of a performance at La Scala (7 December 1952, see OPERA February 1953p.95). It has been claimed that part of the EMI recording was «pirated» from an ARKADIA recording (DIAPASON avril 1995 p.8;see also ORPHEUS, November 1997 S.91,OPÉRA INTERNATIONAL mai 1998 No.224 p.5). According to Robert E. Seletsky in the«original 1952 broadcast, the sound level dropprd precipitously in the 'a capella' ensemble near the end of the first act» and in the EMI versions, «the damaged section is replaced by two minutes from a 1960 Leyla Gencer performance»(OPERA QUARTERLY Vol.16 No.2 p.252). The G.O.P. and Nuova Era releases «retain the original passage , raising the gain and filtering out the the resulting hissand hum» (Seletzky loc.cit. p.255)
